Home of the 1992 Summer Olympics

Although Barcelona was transformed by the renovation and construction projects undertaken in preparation for the 1992 Summer Olympics, the city maintained its cosmopolitan but friendly personality that has enchanted visitors for more than one thousand years.

Mayor Pasqual Maragall gave the inaugural address at the Opening Ceremonies by offering a welcome in the four official languages of the Summer Olympics: Catalan, Spanish, English and French. He said:

Bienvenido a los Juegos Olímpicos de 1992
Welcome to the 1992 Olympic Games
Bienvenu aux Jeux Olympiques de 1992

And the crowd went wild. In lots more than four languages.
